Pediatric dentistry for Oakland families

Kids deserve a dentist who makes them feel safe. At Oakland Dental Associates we create a comfortable, judgment-free environment for children of all ages — from first teeth through the teen years. Our goal is to build good habits early so your child grows up with a healthy smile and zero fear of the dentist.

What we offer for kids

We provide the full range of pediatric dental services in a setting designed to put children at ease. Our team takes the time to explain each step in kid-friendly language so little ones know exactly what to expect.

  • First dental visits (we recommend by age 1)
  • Gentle exams and cleanings
  • Dental sealants to protect molars
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Tooth-colored fillings
  • Habit counseling (thumb-sucking, pacifier use)

What a visit looks like

We'll greet your child by name and let them get comfortable before we begin. The dentist will count their teeth, take x-rays only if needed, and do a gentle cleaning. We explain everything in simple words and let your child ask questions — there's no rushing. Parents are welcome in the treatment room at all times.

Insurance and Denti-Cal

Denti-Cal (Medi-Cal Dental) covers comprehensive dental benefits for children, including exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, sealants, and fluoride treatments. We also accept most PPO plans, CareCredit, credit cards, and cash. We'll verify your child's coverage before the visit if you'd like — just call us.

Family scheduling

Need to bring more than one child? We can often schedule siblings back-to-back so you make just one trip. We're also happy to see parents and kids on the same day. Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Friday.

Preventing cavities at home

Most of what keeps a child cavity-free happens at home. Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, using a smear of fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice for children under 3 and a pea-sized amount from age 3. Brush morning and night, and start flossing once two teeth touch. Water is the best drink between meals — juice and soda are the most common cause of the cavities we see in kids. We'll go over all of this at each visit and show your child how to brush properly.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child first see a dentist?+

The American Dental Association recommends a first visit by age 1 or within six months of the first tooth. Early visits help us spot issues like cavities or bite problems before they develop.

Does Denti-Cal cover kids' dental visits?+

Yes. Denti-Cal provides comprehensive dental coverage for children, including exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, sealants, fluoride, and more.

What if my child is scared of the dentist?+

Many kids are — and we're used to it. Our team goes slowly, explains everything in friendly language, and never forces anything. Most children relax quickly once they see there's nothing to worry about.

Do you see teenagers too?+

Absolutely. We see children and teens of all ages. If your teen needs a general exam, fillings, or wisdom teeth evaluation, we handle it all in one office.

How often should my child see the dentist?+

Every six months is the standard, and Denti-Cal covers exams and cleanings every six months for children (exams every three months from birth to age 3). Regular visits let us catch small cavities while they're still easy to fix.
